FIELD NOTES
Check a frame before you buy it
The outside size, the opening that holds the artwork, and the visible mat window answer different questions.
1. Measure the artwork first
Write down its full width and height, including borders you want to keep. Do not trim a work just to fit a promising frame.
2. Measure where the artwork will sit
Use the usable inside opening, not the outside edges of the moulding. Note the available depth and whether the backing can be removed. A mat window may be smaller than the space behind it.
3. Check both orientations
Compare width and height in each orientation. A larger opening may leave room for a mat; it does not make the mounting, proportions or frame depth suitable automatically.
4. Inspect the frame as an object
Check corner joints, glass, backing, hanging hardware and signs of damp. Include replacement glass, a mat and mounting in your total cost.
5. Make a note before leaving
Keep the inside dimensions and outside dimensions labeled separately. Photograph the back and any damage so you can discuss the job with a framer.
Keep it together in Thriftcraft
- Save both dimensions of the artwork and the frame’s usable opening. Unmeasured pieces can be kept, but cannot be matched yet.
- Use the Framing Bench to compare your saved art and frames. Both orientations are checked.
- Confirm depth, condition and the physical fit before buying; the size comparison cannot inspect the frame.
