Field Guide to Thrifting

FIELD NOTES

Know whether a find will fit at home

Measure the destination and the route there. A piece can fit a wall and still fail to get through the door.

1. Measure the space you can actually use

Record width, depth and height. Include skirting boards, sockets, doors that swing and room to walk or sit. For a shelf, account for objects already on it.

2. Measure the whole find

Use its outside dimensions, including handles, feet, moulding and overhangs. Check the clearance needed for drawers or doors to open.

3. Check the journey

Measure the narrowest doorway, stairs and turns, plus the vehicle opening. Ask whether legs or other parts can safely be removed; do not assume they can.

4. Leave room for uncertainty

A tight numerical fit is a reason to remeasure. Photograph your tape placement and label units so you do not confuse inches and centimeters later.

Keep it together in Thriftcraft

  1. Use Places to keep the room, wall or shelf and the finds that belong there together.
  2. Open New place or Edit place to save its width, height and, where relevant, depth. Add the find to that place and use its Outside size control when measurements are missing.
  3. Places organizes where things belong; it does not automatically prove that furniture fits through a doorway.
