Field Guide to Thrifting

FIELD NOTES

Turn a sale listing into a useful shortlist

Arrive with a few priorities, questions and limits. Listing photos are a starting point, not a condition report.

1. Read the terms before the pictures

Check opening or closing times, entry arrangements, payment methods, fees and the pickup window. Use the sale’s own current terms; practices differ between sellers.

2. Pick a short list

Record each promising object or lot number, the listing link, why it interests you and your unanswered questions. Check whether a photo shows one lot or several separate items.

3. Price the whole purchase

Add the buyer’s premium where applicable, delivery, packing and likely repairs. Check how tax is calculated in the sale terms. Set a total limit before translating it into a maximum bid.

4. Ask about what you cannot see

Request dimensions, damage and missing parts. At a preview, check backs, undersides, moving parts and labels. If a crucial detail remains unknown, allow for it in your decision.

5. Plan the pickup before committing

Confirm when everything must leave, whether help is provided and what vehicle or packing you need. Save the receipt and contact details with the lot number.

Keep it together in Thriftcraft

  1. In Beta Labs, open “Look over a sale” and add the listing screenshots and link if available.
  2. Review the suggested highlights and rough values against the original listing. Check that lot numbers, pickup terms and fees were read correctly.
  3. Keep your own shortlist and limits in the saved sale’s notes. The review does not place bids, contact sellers or reserve items.
Drag to move. Arrow keys move the magpie; hold Shift for larger steps. Enter opens help.
